How AquaEco Water Solutions Reduced a School’s Monthly Water Bill

visual case study report by AquaEco Water Solutions.

From Rising Water Costs to Water Independence

For many schools across Kenya, access to reliable water remains a significant challenge. Rising municipal water costs, occasional supply interruptions, and increasing student populations often place tremendous pressure on school budgets.

Recently, AquaEco Water Solutions partnered with a local school in Kiambu County that was spending KES 50,000- 70,000 every month purchasing water from the local council. Despite this significant expenditure, the school still faced periodic water shortages that disrupted daily operations.

Today, the school enjoys a reliable water supply, zero monthly water bills, and a sustainable solar-powered water system.

This is the story of how AquaEco helped transform the school’s water future.

The Challenge

The school relied entirely on water supplied by the local council.

This created several challenges:

  • Monthly water bills averaging KES 50,000- 70,000
  • Occasional interruptions in water supply
  • Growing demand from students and staff
  • Increasing pressure on the school’s operating budget
  • Concerns about long-term sustainability

Water is essential for every aspect of school operations especially boarding facilities for many functions, including sanitation, cooking, cleaning, landscaping, and student welfare. Educational institutions across Kenya frequently struggle with the high cost and unreliability of external water sources.

School management realized that continuing to rely solely on municipal water was not a sustainable long-term solution.

AquaEco’s Assessment

Our team conducted a comprehensive site assessment to determine the most practical and cost-effective solution.

The assessment considered:

  • Current water consumption
  • Future growth projections
  • Groundwater potential
  • Available space for infrastructure
  • Long-term operating costs

After careful evaluation, AquaEco recommended:

โœ… Borehole drilling

โœ… Solar-powered water pumping

โœ… Water storage optimization

This approach would eliminate recurring water purchase costs while ensuring reliable access to clean water.

The Solution

1. Hydro-Geological Survey

The project began with a professional hydro-geological survey to identify the most suitable drilling location and maximize the chances of accessing sustainable groundwater. All relevant permits including; WRA and NEMA were obtained.

2. Borehole Drilling

AquaEco successfully drilled and developed a borehole capable of meeting the school’s daily water requirements.

The borehole now provides a dependable on-site water source that is not affected by municipal supply interruptions.

3. Solar-Powered Water Pumping System

To eliminate ongoing energy costs, AquaEco installed a solar-powered pumping system.

The solar installation enables the school to:

  • Pump water throughout the day
  • Reduce dependence on grid electricity
  • Avoid rising energy costs
  • Operate sustainably using renewable energy

Solar-powered water systems are increasingly being adopted by schools because they significantly reduce operational costs while providing reliable access to water.

4. Water Storage Enhancement

Adequate storage was incorporated into the project design to ensure water availability during peak demand periods.

This allows the school to maintain a consistent supply for:

  • Drinking water
  • Kitchen operations
  • Washrooms
  • Cleaning
  • School gardens
  • Boarding facilities

The Results

Monthly Water Bill Reduced from KES 70,000 to Zero

Before AquaEco:

๐Ÿ’ธ KES 70,000 per month spent on council water

After AquaEco:

๐Ÿ’ง Zero monthly water purchase costs

The school now produces its own water directly from the borehole.

Reliable Water Supply

The institution no longer worries about:

  • Water shortages
  • Supply interruptions
  • Rationing
  • Unexpected price increases

Students and staff have access to water whenever it is needed.

Significant Annual Savings

Annual savings exceed:

KES 840,000 per year

Funds that were previously spent on water can now be redirected toward:

  • Learning resources
  • Infrastructure improvements
  • Student welfare
  • Educational programs

Sustainability Benefits

The project aligns with Kenya’s growing focus on sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy.

By combining borehole water with solar power, the school has:

  • Reduced operating costs
  • Reduced dependence on external utilities
  • Improved environmental sustainability
  • Increased resilience against future water shortages

Solar-powered water systems are increasingly recognized as a practical solution for schools and institutions seeking long-term cost savings and operational reliability.

Why This Matters for Schools and Institutions

Many schools across Kenya continue to spend thousands of shillings every month on water and electricity.

A properly designed borehole and solar pumping system can:

  • Deliver water independence
  • Eliminate recurring water costs
  • Improve operational efficiency
  • Support student health and sanitation
  • Generate substantial long-term savings

For institutions facing rising utility costs, investing in water infrastructure is often one of the highest-return projects available.
