The oldest trick in their bag is "stealing meters."
What do I mean by that?
You see, before you drill, a hydro-geologist performs a survey on your land to determine the recommended depth. Let’s say your report recommends 200 meters.
To give you permanent water independence, your driller must drill all the way to 200 meters. But dishonest drillers do the exact opposite!
What usually happens is these crooked drillers stop drilling somewhere around 175 meters because your borehole is already producing water. They hide the real reason for this, and you’ll never notice it on site.
Whenever a survey recommends 200 meters, it doesn’t mean your sustainable aquifer starts at 200 meters. It means the water layer might start at 170 meters and extend down to 200 meters.
When these contractors strike water at 175 meters, you celebrate because you think you’ve finally hit the jackpot. But for how long?
To make matters worse, the driller bills you for the full 200 meters despite drilling only 175 meters, all because you have no clue what is happening behind the rig.
If your driller charges Ksh 6,500 per meter, they pocket Ksh 162,500 in pure unearned profit while your shallow borehole dries up in less than two years. And that’s only if they steal meters! Dishonest drillers have dozens of ways to cut corners you would be hard pressed to think about, from steel casings to fake 24-hour pump tests.
